Barbara Phillips

The Trailblazers regret to announce the passing of long-time Board member Barbara Phillips at age 88. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, she played an instrumental role in the planning and operations of the Trailblazers banquet and activities until she needed to step down due to health issues. Her late-husband, Jimmy Phillips, was a top star in American motorcycle racing in the 1950s until he was killed in a race at Gardena Speedway in 1958. Details on services and contact addresses were not announced, and will be posted when available.

LUCILLE FLANDERS REMEMBERS AN OLD FRIEND

It is with sadness that I read about my old and dear friend Barbara Phillips and my thoughts go way back to our early life and dear friendship. Barb and I were involved in many things regarding the sport of m/c's, long before most of you were born. When Jimmy was killed we were there. I had a baby shower for her right away, mostly to keep all of our friends together. We lived in a large house here in Pasadena and it was full! And I must tell you, Barbara and I were kept busy in those days holding checks together on the Green Horn and many other sports events. I kept a mailing list for District 37 sports committee and Barbara would make sure it was correct since we attended all the meetings together.

When Floyd Clymer died none of the old timers came forth to get the banquets together so my husband Earl called a meeting of Bill Bagnall, Max Bubeck, Barbara (and I can't remember who else) together to plan a dinner. The best place was at Broadside Park, a very nice banquet room and besides we lived at the hill just above the place. The Trail Blazers dinners were held there for several years, with about 150 people attending in those days. Barb and I had great fun planning all those parties.

I would like to thank Judy for your e-mails, I read the most of them and you keep me informed though I am not far from what is happening in the m/c world. I live about one half mile south of our Flanders Co. factory where I worked for about 50 years and still love the business and motorcycle world! My three sons have remained true to their father's love for the sport...John keeps things in shape at the factory, Paul also finds time for much going on in District 37 sports and Bruce is busy at race tracks announcing.

Deaths and e-mail both have a way of keeping people hearing from each other. I am 91 now, let me hear from some of you, (mostly good news) and my thoughts go out to Barbara's children with love.

Lucile Flanders
